Amazon.com Product Description: The latest addition to the Nokia N-Series, the 3G-enabled Nokia N79 combines intelligent and customizable design with a fully-loaded multimedia computer. Behind its sleek exterior, the Nokia N79 offers integrated navigation, music with FM transmitter, high-speed connectivity, and superior web browsing. Find and share your passions and map your discoveries with A-GPS and Nokia Maps, and capture faces and places with the Carl Zeiss 5 megapixel autofocus camera featuring geotagging capabilities. Other features include Wi-Fi networking (802.11b/g), Bluetooth for handsfree devices and stereo music streaming, MicroSD memory expansion, access to personal email, Symbian operating system (9.3, Series 60) for powerful in-phone applications and games, an integrated FM transmitter for listening to music through your car stereo, and up to 5.5 hours of talk time.

This unlocked cell phone can be used with a GSM network service provider and it provides quad-band connectivity (850/900/1800/1900 MHz). It does not come with a SIM card, and it requires that you provide a SIM card for usage with your selected service provider. This phone comes with a one-year warranty from a third party provider.

Additionally, this phone can be paired with 850/1900 MHz UMTS/HSDPA 3G networks in the United States. When paired with a compatible 3G network, you'll enjoy a high-speed connection offering a variety of feature-rich wireless services--from data connectivity to your office to multimedia streaming, and take advantage of simultaneous voice and data services. In areas in the U.S. not served by a 3G network or in foreign territories, you'll continue to receive data service via EDGE network (depending on network compatibility).

Phone Features
The candybar-style Nokia N79 has a brilliant 2.4-inch LCD screen with a 240 x 320-pixel resolution and support for 16.7 million colors, and it features an ambient light detector, color and brightness controls, and an orientation sensor that changes the screen from portrait to landscape (and back again). Below the screen you'll find standard send/end and soft navigation keys as well as a dedicated camera key, and a stylish numeric keypad. The phone has an internal 50 MB memory, which can be expanded via optional MicroSD memory cards (up to 8 GB in size).

Handsfree communication is easy thanks to the integrated speakerphone. This phone also provides Bluetooth wireless connectivity (version 2.0), and includes profiles for communication headset, handsfree car kits, and file transfer. With the A2DP Bluetooth profile, you can stream your music to a pair of compatible Bluetooth stereo headphones. You can connect your laptop (either via Bluetooth or wired USB) and enjoy dial-up networking--surf the Internet, send email, and access files from a server. You'll also be able to access open Wi-Fi networks in offices and hotspots via the integrated 802.11b/g wireless connectivity. (This phone provides the following Wi-Fi security protocols: WPA2-Enterprise, WPA2-Personal, WPA-Enterprise, WPA-Personal, WEP)

The Nokia N79 actually has two cameras, a high-resolution, 5-megapixel camera on the back of the device and a lower resolution camera on the front (VGA resolution, 640 x 480) on the front of the phone for video calls (requires network compatibility). The main camera on the back of the N95 supports an image capture resolution of 2584 x 1938 pixels. It allows DVD-like quality video capture at 30 frames per second at VGA resolution (640 x 480 pixels). Further, with the integrated A-GPS, you can now "geotag" pictures with location data and share them with online communities.

With the Carl Zeiss optics on the 5-megapixel camera, you can capture print quality photos and DVD-like quality video clips. Carl Zeiss, a world leader in high quality camera lenses, brings an award-winning legacy to the Nokia N79 with state-of-the-art optics for mobile photography and mobile video. The Zeiss name has been associated with cameras from Hasselblad, Rollei, Yashica, Sony, and Nikon. This auto-focus Carl Zeiss Tessar lens has a 5.2mm focal length and focus range as close as 10cm. The camera also features a flash, video light, autofocus with two-stage capture key, self-timer, white balance and exposure compensation settings, scene settings, and digital video stabilization.

Images are saved as JPEG or EXIF files while videos are recorded in the MPEG-4 file format with the .mp4 file extension, or in the 3GPP file format with the .3gp file extension (sharing quality). Photos and video clips can be enjoyed on a compatible television thanks to the device's TV out feature and support for Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) technology.

With A-GPS functionality, you'll be able find your route quickly and easily, whether walking or driving (A-GPS is a network dependant feature that requires a data plan; additional charges may apply). The Nokia Maps application offers richer maps with urban details and satellite views and the ability to search and download information about points of interests, such as restaurants, hotels, companies, travel agencies, airports, and more. It also provides optional upgrades such as City Guides, turn-by-turn pedestrian mode and voice-guided car navigation.

The N79 has all the bases covered when it comes to messaging. Support is built in for sending and receiving text, video, graphics and sound via messages. It also enables you to check your email on the go (supporting POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP protocols). T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit--a plus for mobile text messaging users.

View web pages as they were originally intended with the integrated Nokia Web Browser, which enables you to zoom out to a full screen view of the entire page using the Mini Map feature. Find the section you want and then zoom in to the content you need. The text instantly adjusts to the size of your screen. The browser also keeps a history of your browsing so you can quickly get back to where you started.

Log on to online communities like Friendster, Flickr or YouTube or click through to Nokia services such as the Nokia Music Store, N-Gage, Nokia Maps and Share on Ovi, an online service that enables you to share personal pictures and videos from your mobile device. A Friendster widget is available for download, allowing you to browse Friendster friends' profiles, view and post shoutouts, upload pictures taken with your handset, and browse your own and friends' photo albums.

To ensure each device is as distinctive as its user, customizable features are available at the Nokia Download! store, a one stop personalization shop, already embedded in Nokia Nseries devices. It lets you create a unique experience for your phone by offering easy access to a multitude of popular ringtones, branded entertainment content, the latest in mobile gaming and dynamic applications.

Great Phone

by Jeffrey Liss 2009-07-18, 3 people found this review helpful
I bought the N79 11 days ago. Thus far, I'm very satisfied with this phone. The reception is great and crystal clear wherever I've been. Battery life is fine. One of the first things I did was upgrade the firmware over the air via Wifi. I have software version 20.175 now. I've used the music player and Internet radio a lot and I'm impressed. I get a lot of great music and sports radio stations over the Internet. I just use my old 4GB San Disk Micro SD card for my 60's music and it plays extremely well. Operamini is my default web browser and works great over Wifi. Moreover, YouTube videos play great straight from the Operamini browser or Nokia's native browser. I just had to change a few settings in Operamini and realplayer first, giving it privileges. I haven't tried my unlimited AT&T Media net plan on the N79 because I use that feature on my N78 and I didn't feel like exchanging sim cards.

The N79 is a little lighter than the N78 and the OS is just as snappy if not snappier. I haven't used the camera yet so I cannot really comment on that. I never had an issue with the keyboard on the N78 (which I've owned for 8 months now) and don't have any issues with the keyboard on the N79. I don't find the N79 keyboard stiff.

This phone has everything I need (and more) and does it extremely well. I'm happy I bought the N79 (US Version).

Great Phone

This is my first Nokia, and my first unlocked phone.

I've had the phone for a little over a week and these are my impressions:

It's built really well. It feels solid and the screen seems pretty scratch resistant so far. The buttons are also really nice and the number keys are god for texting. From my research it seems to be a characteristic of N series phones. The design is clean as well. It seems well thought out and there's not much missing (an external play/pause button would be nice, but it comes with an inline remote to plug your earphones into), but nothing extra that I could do with out either.

It looks great. I got a white version (even thought the product description says grey) which I actually prefer. There is also a black version of the N79 that has been released recently as well. The changeable backs are cool (I received the white, red and brown covers), but I don't know how much I will change them personally.

The features as you've read in the product description are incredible. And honestly it does all of them well. The music player is good. The camera is decent (Not the best 5 mp pics I've ever seen, but for a phone the pics are awesome, and it has an automatic flash). I wasn't expecting a whole lot from the video recorder, but the quality really surprised me, in a good way. The gps is awesome. You get a 90 trial of the turn by turn voice navigation, I'm not sure how much the subscription costs, but if it's not outrageous, I would absolutely spend money for it. The FM transmitter is a really cool feature, I travel a lot and am in a lot of rental cars and it works like a charm. At this point in time this phone seems to have about every feature out there. It's pretty amazing considering it's size.

I've never used a symbian phone before and there is a bit of a learning curve. It took me a few days of moderate use to get comfortable with it. The N79 was a bit buggy out of the box. I was also disappointed with the software support for Macs. You have to buy a plug in for iSync to work (not yet supported) and even then it recognizes it as an N95 8GB, but it does work. I hope there will be more Mac support in the near future. Nokia has recently released a firmware update and with the amount of things that were improved, it makes you think that Nokia kinda rushed this phone out the door a little. After I updated my phone the OS is much more solid and a little faster and more responsive. If you purchase this phone, updating the software should be your first order of business.

I can't think of anything else I could possibly expect a phone to do that this phone doesn't. I chose this phone over the N82 because of the looks and because it supports US 3G unlike the N82. The N82 supposedly has a better camera, but for me I'd rather have the 3G.

*Update*

This phone is on v20 of it's firmware and MUCH more stable. I've used this phone day in and day out for 6 months, and there still isn't a phone this size that can do everything this phone can.

The only negative thing I'll say is that the battery life is not what I'd hoped. It will only last for one day. Granted I do a lot with it in one day. Music, GPS, Internet, some pics all while it keeps 3 email boxes up to date. I guess you can't have everything.

One big bonus I've recently discovered is that this phone supports a 16 gb micro sdhc card! I recently purchased the 16 gb class 6 card made by Trancend Transcend 16 GB microSDHC Class 6 Flash Memory Card TS16GUSDHC6E [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging] (The is one that comes with an SD adapter, not in the Amazon packaging, that's the one I bought) and it works perfectly.

I'm happy with this phone.
